Family Day · June 11, 2009

One year ago today on the other side of the world, Wyatt lost his status as an orphan.  He was officially adopted into a family.

My post on Gotcha day (yesterday) on Facebook read like this.

Happy Gotcha Day Wyatt!  One year ago today, we met our then five year old son in a conference room on the other side of the world.  We were nervous and didn't know what to expect, but we found a little boy ready for an adventure.  Within days we learned that he has a huge heart.  He is also stinkin cute, fiercely competitive, and charming.

Julia's Gotcha day falls just three days before Wyatt's, so we took the family out to eat at a Chinese buffet with our local FCC chapter.  We then dug out the gifts we bought for them in China for this occasion, and wow did we ever take a trip down memory lane -- so many treasured memories are kept safe in our hearts of two amazing trips to China.  Someday we hope to take them back and let them see it all, Hong Kong, Beijing, Guangzhou, and of course the orphanages where they were first loved.

What a difference a year makes!

Just the other day, Wyatt came down the stairs after watching Toy Story 2, and exclaimed, "that movie was AWESOME!" One year ago, he did not know a single word of English, and now I don't think he knows any Mandarin.

He told me several times at the end of the school year that he stayed on green in his class, "because I work hard all day long."

He progressed by leaps and bound during his last few weeks of school.  Wow!  What is next?
