Mia was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in September 2005. Here is her story . . .
The date was June 9, 2005. It started as any typical day in the Lossing home except that Mia was finishing up a round of antibiotics for Coxsaacki virus, a common childhood illness. Mia and I (Beth) attended class at The Little Gym that morning and a friend pointed out that Mia's eyelids looked puffy. Once the suggestion had been made, I agreed and thought it might be a good idea to take Mia back to the pediatrician and run it by her. At the visit, we came to the conclusion that she was just still getting over the virus so we went on our way, not giving it much more thought. By 5:00 p.m. Mia's stomach was looking bloated and she was not herself. While on the potty, she was crying and yelped in pain when I put a little pressure on her tummy. I thought she was constipated, but called the doctor anyway, assuming she would just agree with me and we could put it behind us. The doctor was concerned and said we needed to get her to the Emergency Room right away in case there was a blockage or something. At the time, I thought the doctor was being overly-cautious, but we did as we were told.
Hours later in the ER, we were blind-sided by a nurse telling us "You have a very sick little girl on your hands and she needs to be admitted to the hospital." Later we were told that Mia most certainly would have died in an orphanage in China. God has big plans for this little one!
