Flu season usually runs from October through April so we were all looking forward to May 1st. Flu season would be behind us and we could relax a little. Nope...it was not to be! I'll be honest...this swine flu has us nervous. Brea's immune system is already weak from the anti-rejection drugs that she takes but her recent illness and hospital stay has also taken its toll on her immune system which makes her an easy target for this swine flu. The good news is that there are no confirmed cases here in NC and we are holding our breath and praying that there won't be. The bad news is that even though Brea is feeling better her doctors have decided that she needs to lay low and stay home while her immune system has a chance to build back up. That means no preschool, no church, no playgroup, no trips to the mall and no attending school programs at Brooke and Baker's schools.
As if worrying about Brea were not a full time job...we received news today from our agency that the Chinese government has issued a statement about the swine flu and Americans coming to China to adopt. It seems that they are concerned about Americans coming to China and bringing the swine flu with them so they have asked agencies to postpone all travel until this thing has a chance to pass. They also advised Americans traveling in China to report to a local hospital if they have flu like symptoms. It also seems that the government is not going to allow foreigners to visit the orphanages while this is going on in order to protect the children. There are all kinds of rumors flying around about what is going to happen with international adoptions due to the swine flu and it would be easy to get caught up in all of them but instead I am going to just focus on the fact that I know without a doubt that this is going to happen in God's timing. I'd like to say that I am not at all worried about Bailey BUT that would not be true. I am worried about her. She is in the capital city of her province and she is living in a small apartment with her foster parents and five foster siblings. She is exposed to the orphanage staff and children daily as are her foster siblings. What mother wouldn't worry about their child living on the other side of the world, especially in a situation like this one where there seems to be nothing at all that I can do to protect her? So, please keep Brea and Bailey in your prayers that they will both stay well while this swine flu passes. Also, please pray that this flu does not delay our travels to bring Bailey home. We had hoped to have her home by early summer but with the Chiense govenment issuing this statement it is looking more and more likely that our travels will be delayed a bit at best.
